Bonfire Night – November 5th

November 5th has landed on a Tuesday this year, making it fairly awkward for business in the events industry to host anything on this date. You will find that most business will try to incorporate both Halloween and Bonfire night as one event. If you’re lucky to go to 2 separate events, Bonfire night normally hosts a huge bonfire with a firework display, food such as BBQ, Burger vans candy floss etc. and entertainment, possibly rides for children, grab a duck or win a cuddly toy.

When I was a child it was all about throwing hoops over goldfish bowls and my mum pulling her hair out as I would be proudly carrying around this bag of water with my goldfish in and a few days later, I would be in floods of tears as my goldfish would be floating as opposed to swimming. Oh the joys of childhood…. Im not sure if they are still allowed to offer live goldfish as prises anymore? but it’s a fond memory (of winning the goldfish not of it floating).

I remember one year when i was a young child my parents decided to buy a box of fireworks, this was a first for us and i was so excited. Mum read all the instructions before had and in those days lots of things came in metal containers which mum would keep for dad to store nails etc in, so she placed the fireworks in a tin as instructed, eagerly overlooked by myself.

The time had come for dad to arrange the fireworks in the garden, they looked great in their colourful wrappings, i was so excited. I remember we had a Catherine wheel that Dad proudly nailed to the fence a couple of huge rockets on sticks along with a few smaller ones and some stumpy ones that dad placed on a bricks around the garden.

The fireworks were all positioned and ready to be lit, it was now time. Mum handed dad a torch and a box of matches, lighting the red tapper, dad lit a stumpy one first, first, it coughed and spluttered some colourful sparks and if you blinked you would have missed it. Dad seeming my disappointment quickly lit the next one and the same happened. I could see both of my parents were disappointed as i was, dad said don’t worry i will lite a few together so we had rockets going off with a huge bang and a few sparkles amongst the little ones, not much of a show, finally the Catherine wheel proudly nailed to the fence earlier by dad. It was a really good size, I remember and it felt like this was our last hope to have some sort of magic from the night. Dad gingerly walked over with the tapper stepping over orange glowing remains of  fireworks canisters and lit the Catherine wheel, “Wow” it was amazing as it spun round and round and scorching dads fence in the process. Needless to say, we never had fireworks in the garden again but the highlight of it all was the hand held sparklers, I couldn’t get enough of writing my name with them. I still love today and if they are about will always write my name as i did all those years ago! I know, I’m such a child at heart…

Stay safe and keep warm!
