Shadows in the Frame – Chapter 2

After-Dark Diaries

The Door That Shouldn’t Have Opened**

The hallway smelled different.

Not wrong… not dangerous… but different.
A faint shift in the air she never would have noticed before tonight.
Cooler. Damp. Carrying something metallic, like rain-soaked iron.

Everlaine froze halfway down the hall, bare feet sinking into the runner rug her mother chose years before. She stared at the door, her heavily bolted, deadlocked, chain-secured front door… now open just wide enough to be an accusation.

Her heart beat a hard, high rhythm against her ribs.
Morris arched his back, fur puffing in outrage or warning – with him it was hard to tell.

Everlaine’s mind ran through a dozen logical explanations.
Draft. Faulty lock. Forgetfulness.

But she never forgot the lock.
Her routine was her religion.

She swallowed, tongue dry.

“Hello?”
Her voice was too soft, but anything louder felt like it might break something fragile in the air.

No answer.

She stepped closer. The cold night seeped in through the crack like a living thing, brushing her ankle, lifting the hem of her sweatshirt. Her silk camisole warmed at her skin, the contrast sharp, almost intimate… heat against chill, vulnerability against threat.

Her fingers trembled as she reached for the door.

Don’t close this window. You won’t like what happens if you do.
The message pulsed in her mind.

Whoever typed that…
Whoever flickered her screens…
Whoever knew her name…

Was this their doing?

Another step.
The floorboard creaked under her heel, an old familiar sound made suddenly sinister.

Her fingertips brushed the cold metal handle…

And a shape moved.

Not outside.
Behind her. In the house.

She spun.

The hallway was long, dim, shadows pooling in the corners like something asleep. Yet the silhouette at the far end was unmistakable… tall, still, human.

Her breath stretched thin.

Everlaine’s throat tightened, but she forced her voice out.

“Who’s there?”

The silhouette didn’t move. Not fully. But its head tilted, a slow, animal turn, as if studying her.

Her pulse hammered.
Her blood felt too warm.

She took a step back toward the front door.

The figure took one step forward.

Not a threat.
Not a rush.
A slow step, deliberate… almost curious.

“Stay back,” she whispered.

It stopped.

The hallway stretched between them like a long held breath.

Morris hissed sharply, bounding into a crouch, then, bizarrely, stopped mid-motion. His eyes fixed on the figure, but instead of growling or bolting, he simply… stared. Unblinking. Ears flat in confusion rather than fear.

Everlaine’s stomach twisted.

Even the cat didn’t know what to make of this.

She reached slowly for the light switch, fingers scraping the wall…

The lights flickered back to life on their own.

Her monitors.
Her lamps.
The hallway sconces.

Every bulb in the house blazed at once.

She flinched…
And the silhouette vanished.

Gone.
Impossible.
No sound, no flash, no retreat of footsteps.
Just an empty hallway where someone… something… had been seconds before.

Her breath left her in a trembling rush.

Something else flickered then – not the lights this time.

Her mobile phone buzzed on the console table.

She lifted it with shaking fingers.

A text message.
Unknown number.
No contact name.

YOU LEFT YOUR DOOR OPEN.

Her mouth dried.
She typed back with trembling thumbs.

Did you come inside?

A pause.
Then:

NO. BUT SOMETHING ELSE DID.

Everlaine’s lungs forgot how to function.

She typed:

What?

Another message appeared instantly, as if the sender was waiting.

NOT WHAT. WHO.

Her fingers hovered over the keypad.

She typed again, slower:

Who?

The reply didn’t come as text.
It came as a photo.

A fresh image appeared – grainy, dark, but unmistakable.

The hallway.
Her hallway.

From moments ago.

And in the background, exactly where she’d seen the silhouette:

A tall figure standing completely still, head tilted toward her.

But there was something else she hadn’t seen in the moment – something only the photo caught.

The figure’s eyes.
Not glowing.
Not monstrous.

Just… watching.
Too intently.
Like they knew her.
Like they’d been waiting a long time.

And worst of all…

They looked almost human.

Almost.

Her phone buzzed with another message.

LOCK THE DOOR. NOW.

Everlaine didn’t need telling twice.
She slammed the door, threw the bolt, clicked the deadlock, and shoved the chain across with shaking hands. Her breath came in short, sharp bursts.

Her phone buzzed again.

IT WON’T COME BACK IF YOU BOLTED IT.

She swallowed thickly.

What won’t? She typed.

A long pause. Longer than before.
As though the sender were choosing words carefully.

Then:

THE THING THAT FOLLOWED YOU HOME.

Everlaine’s knees weakened.

Her voice broke in the silence.

“…Followed me?”

Another message.

IT WASN’T ME IN THE HALLWAY. BUT I KNOW WHO IT WAS.
AND WHY IT CHOSE YOU.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

Another buzz.

I CAN EXPLAIN EVERYTHING.
BUT NOT LIKE THIS.
YOU NEED TO MEET ME.

Everlaine stared at the glowing screen.

“No,” she whispered.
It wasn’t bravery. Or logic.
It was instinct.
She didn’t meet strangers.
She barely met delivery drivers.

The phone buzzed again.

IF YOU DON’T COME, YOU WON’T SURVIVE THE WEEK.

Morris yowled – sharp, sudden, terrified.

Everlaine spun.

The shadow stood again at the end of the hall.

Closer than before.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

And Everlaine realised something with a chill that sank to her bones:

Everyone had seen her as unremarkable.
Invisible.
Forgettable.

But something… someone… had noticed her long before tonight.

And now?

Now it had finally stepped out of the dark to claim her.

To be continued…
