Here are a few facts about our winters past and present.

Fact – The coldest UK winters on record?

  • Between 1300 – 1850 we experienced a “little ice age”  which saw the River Thames frozen solid
  • The UK’s worst winter on record was dubbed the “Great Frost”, way back in 1683-84
  • The winter of 1739-40 is one of the worst on record with a severe frost, which saw temperatures plummet to -9C
  • In 1963 the Thames froze again as snow covered the country
  • Between 1978-1979 the UK suffered again under a modern “snow blizzard “
  • And in 2010, a “Big Freeze” across Britain saw an average temperature of -1C, the coldest for 100 years, the Met Office have confirmed.

December 2019 a record month?

Seemingly yes, it was – but certainly not for the plummeting temperatures you’d expect.

December 2019 was weirdly the warmest on record as Decembers go.

It gave us the hottest December day ever recorded and strangely this was recorded in the Scottish Highlands.

Temperatures reached a glorious 18.7C a lot warmer than what we are experiencing at the moment.

For those of you wondering, at the moments there’s no sign of a really cold stint but as February is now our coldest month of the year, we will just have to see what comes our way. will we need a jumper or a coat, only time will tell…
