Sue’s After-Dark Diaries: Episode 19 –
Halloween & Secrets
Reader Intro
Halloween meets chaos on the Spanish coast in Sue’s After-Dark Diaries Halloween. When a Day of the Dead beach party mixes foam, fire, and flirtation, Sue’s night takes a turn from festive to filthy faster than a margarita spill.
Masks hide faces, tequila hides inhibitions, and even Dan-Sue’s ever-faithful vibrating companion decides to join the party.

Halloween & Secrets
The Beach, the Bodies, and the Beautiful Mayhem
Spain takes Halloween to another level. They call it El Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead – but don’t be fooled by the name. It’s less about mourning and more about music, mayhem, and making sure every grave has more flowers than a royal wedding.
Tonight, though, the dead were the only ones getting any rest.
The beach was alive, literally glowing. Fire pits flickered along the sand, casting orange halos through the smoke. The smell of roasted hog and salty air swirled around us, while a foam machine coughed out white bubbles like a drunk washing machine. There were masks, feathers, painted skulls, glitter, and somewhere in the madness, my best intentions – gone faster than a gin and tonic on a hot night.
Mark was already at the bar queue, bless him, trying to wrestle two margaritas and a sangria from a crowd dressed like undead flamenco dancers. I told him I’d find us a spot near the low tables, cushions, lanterns, and a view of the sea that looked like liquid silk.
It should’ve been romantic. It was romantic. Until Dan started vibrating in my handbag.
“Not now,” I muttered, giving the bag a subtle nudge with my knee. A few heads turned. I smiled sweetly, pretending to adjust my dress. Sue’s After-Dark Diaries Halloween wasn’t supposed to include that kind of special effect- not yet anyway.
Masks and Mischief
Everyone was masked. There was something thrilling about not knowing who was who. Men in suits, women in lace, sequins, painted skulls, the occasional Dracula sipping rosé. I slipped on my own mask, a delicate black lace number that covered just enough to feel scandalous.
A man brushed past me, his mask silver and expression unreadable. He didn’t speak, just smiled behind it. The music thumped low – Spanish beats that made the sand pulse beneath my bare feet.
I sank onto a pile of cushions near a fire pit. Someone handed me a glass of something pink and lethal. I took a sip and immediately forgot what my name was. The air smelled of smoke and coconut oil and sin.
Then he appeared again. The silver-masked stranger.

He offered me his hand. I should’ve said no. I should’ve waited for Mark. But Sue on holiday isn’t known for restraint. Especially not when tequila’s involved.
I stood, took his hand, and felt the spark. Not metaphorical, it was actual static from the foam machine fizzing nearby. We both laughed, and before I knew it, he was pulling me gently toward the dance area.
The foam was knee-high now. Bodies slid and shimmered under the coloured lights. He danced close, one hand at the small of my back, the other teasingly grazing my hip. His breath was warm near my ear.
“You look beautiful,” he said, voice low, accented – Spanish maybe, or possibly too many cocktails to tell.
And that was it. My logic melted faster than the ice in Mark’s undelivered drink.

When Dan Decided to Join the Dance
We were moving, slow but electric. The music built, foam swirling around us like some surreal snowstorm. My bag was on the floor nearby – probably sulking from being ignored.
Then it happened.
The familiar, unmistakable bzzzzzzzz.
At first, I thought it was the music. Then I realised the foam was… vibrating? No. Not the foam. My bag.
“Oh no,” I whispered.
Silver Mask leaned in, “What?”
“Nothing! Just… beach crabs!” I blurted. Because apparently, that was the first thing my brain could come up with.
A woman beside us squealed, “Crabs?!”
Perfect. Now the crowd was dancing away from me like I’d announced a biblical plague. I lunged for the bag, foam spraying, trying to find the off switch through a slippery sea of lipstick, tissues, and emergency snacks.
Dan was having the time of his life. The louder the music, the more enthusiastic he seemed.
I finally fished him out, clutching the still-buzzing culprit behind my back like a guilty secret.
Silver Mask chuckled, clearly amused. “Interesting purse you have.”
“Limited edition,” I said quickly. “Only… one of a kind.”
He grinned, stepped closer, and whispered, “I like a woman who carries power in her bag.”
I nearly melted on the spot.

The Kiss and the Confusion
The chaos melted into a strange, sensual calm. We found ourselves half-hidden by smoke and foam, the firelight flickering off his mask. He traced a finger down my shoulder, slow and deliberate. My pulse raced.
I didn’t even think. I leaned in. The kiss was soft at first, then deepened – hungry, unexpected, dangerous in that way only anonymous kisses can be.
The world blurred: music, laughter, crackle of fire. All I could feel was him, his warmth, the salt on his lips, the way his hands knew exactly where to rest.
When he pulled back, I caught my breath. “Mark?” I whispered, voice unsteady.
He tilted his head. “Mark?”
The accent. The tone. The definitely-not-Mark of it all hit me like a bucket of cold sangria.
“Oh… bloody hell,” I muttered.
He laughed, a rich, delicious laugh. “Not Mark,” he said. “But I’m flattered.”
I stared, mouth open, somewhere between shock and laughter. “Well,” I said finally, “Happy Halloween, stranger.”
He bowed slightly. “The best secrets happen under masks.”
And then, like smoke, he was gone… disappearing into the glitter and foam before I could say another word.

Mark Returns, Margaritas and Mayhem
“Sue!” Mark appeared, dripping foam, holding two cocktails and a half-eaten skewer of something that might once have been pork.
“Where did you get to?” he shouted over the music.
“Oh, just mingling!” I said, trying not to sound breathless – or guilty. “The crowd’s wild, isn’t it?”
He handed me my drink. “You won’t believe it, someone started a rumour there were crabs on the beach!”
“Really?” I said, pretending to sip, eyes darting to my bag. Dan was mercifully silent now, but one wrong bump and he’d probably start a second outbreak.
We settled on the cushions again, foam clinging to us both. Mark was chatting away about the DJ, the roast, the smoke machines. I smiled, nodded, half-listening, my mind spinning with the kiss, the stranger, the ridiculousness of it all.
Sue’s After-Dark Diaries Halloween was living up to its name – and then some.

Foam, Fire, and a Final Fiasco
The night blurred in colour and laughter. Someone started drumming on a bucket, and another was doing shots out of a snorkel. Mark went to find us more drinks (again), and I tried to wring out my hair with a napkin.
That’s when I felt it.
The vibration. Again.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake!” I hissed, opening my bag. But this time, Dan wasn’t inside.
He was on the sand, about three feet away, glowing faintly from the firelight like a possessed glow stick.
A small child pointed. “Mira! What’s that?”
I froze. A group of dancers turned. One man picked it up… grinning and then pressed the button. The familiar bzzzzzz roared to life. The entire circle erupted in laughter.
I did the only thing I could do. I ran.
Foam flying, mask half off, laughter chasing me down the beach.
Mark’s voice faint in the distance-“Sue? Where are you going?”
I didn’t stop. I just kept running, laughing so hard my sides ached. Somewhere behind me, I heard a woman yell, “The English lady’s toy is possessed!”
Classic.
The Walk Back and the Whisper of Reflection
By the time I reached the quieter end of the beach, the chaos had faded to a distant roar. I sat down, toes buried in the cool sand, the moon shimmering like a secret.
I could still taste the stranger’s kiss, still hear the laughter echoing through the night.
Spain celebrates the dead with colour, life, and love – and maybe that’s the point. To remind us that while we’re alive, we should live fully. Laugh at the madness. Kiss the wrong man. Dance with foam in your hair.
And always – always – check your bag before the party starts.
I glanced at the sea, still chuckling. Somewhere out there, the silver-masked stranger was probably telling his friends about the mad English woman with the haunted handbag.
I raised my glass to the stars. “To Halloween,” I said softly, “and to secrets best left on the sand.”
Then, of course, my phone buzzed. A message from Mark:
“Where did you go? Also… someone found your electric toothbrush.”
I grinned. “Close enough,” I whispered, heading back toward the lights, ready for whatever chaos awaited me next.
