What is circumcision?
Circumcision is the surgical removal of a mans foreskin, “ouch” I hear you say. A great variety of materials, devices and techniques are used for circumcision. The goal is to ensure that safety and risks are minimised regardless of the technique that is used.
Male circumcision has been performed for thousands of years. It is the most frequently implemented surgical intervention in children, and one third of all the men in the world are circumcised. The necessity of circumcision varies depending on religious beliefs and social structures in society and the procedure may also be performed for medical reasons.
Circumcision is routinely performed in Muslim and Jewish cultures; however Muslims perform circumcision at age 6, whereas Jews perform it immediately after birth. Circumcision is one of the most common operations in the USA, Three-quarters of American adult men are circumcised and resulting in over one million circumcisions performed in the USA every year, that’s around one every 30 seconds.
