What is Maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is is a plant which grows way up high in the Andes of central Peru in harsh conditions and is classified as cruciferous vegetable, meaning its part of the cabbage family of vegetables and comes in colours of black, red and yellow being the most common. Maca has been found in Peru for approximately 2000 years being used in culinary delights and medicinal use. The root of the Maca plant is where the magic is, it’s dried out and then ground into a powder. These days it can be found not only in powder form but also in liquid and capsules. With its earthy, nutty flavour, it’s not a desired taste so many people choose to add to their cereal, sweet treats or smoothies. I used to add mine to a glass of orange juice first thing and for me this worked well.
