In my opinion, this soulful lady is so underestimated with her effortless velvet vocal tones and her piano skills that are timeless.
Roberta Flack was born 10th February 1937 and yes, amazingly this makes her 83 years of age today. Internationally hailed as one of the greatest songstresses of our time, GRAMMY Award winning Roberta Flack remains unparalleled in her ability to tell a story through her music. Her songs bring insight into our lives, loves, culture and politics, while effortlessly traversing a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz. She is the only solo artist to win the GRAMMY Award Record of the Year for two (2) consecutive years: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face won the 1973 GRAMMY and Killing Me Softly with His Song won the 1974 GRAMMY.

You will probably know of her through her No. 1 singles “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face“, “Killing Me Softly with His Song“, “Feel Like Makin’ Love“; and “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You“, two of her many duets with Donny Hathaway.
April 2018 as Roberta stood back stage ready to receive a lifetime achievement award by The Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo Theatre. Amidst a concert featuring Cassandra Wilson, Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard, Nona Hendryx and more. Roberta Flack felt dizzy and collapsed backstage, she was rushed to hospital. The concert went on without her.
A number of months later after recovering from her stroke, she is ready to sing again. In 2018, Ms. Flack retired from touring and continues to make special appearances. What an inspirational women to us all.
I had the pleasure of seeing Roberta sing live when I lived in Thailand. Luckily, when you own a newspaper you are treated like royalty and given exclusive passes to certain events and it just so happened she was performing at a new hotel called Grand Mirage as part of an exclusive launch party. A high stage was in situ and as she sat at her piano with her crew all around her, she performed a number of her classic hits to my delight. Everyone was up on their feet and singing along, a truly wonderful and memorable experience. Thank you Ms Roberta Flack.
