“What’s going on with Mosquitoes in the UK?”
The first time it happened was at the beginning of the year. It was early one morning and I was sat in my kitchen at my computer with the door open. I reached for my coffee and felt something in between my knuckles, instantly looking, I couldn’t see anything apart from a white lump which seemed to be growing by the second, It instantly looked like a burn.
Approximately 30 minutes later and the white lump started to produce pin head sized blisters in kind of a circular pattern. Over the course of the morning these blister grew and joined to became one large blister.
Painful and a little itchy, I was curious of what had bitten me but not worried, I assumed it must have been a spider bite or something.
The end result was about 3/4 days later the blister eventually burst but wouldn’t heal became infected and after seeking antibiotic cream it eventually healed some 3 weeks later but leaving an area numb to the touch and deep scaring. see pictures below.
Some months later, again sat in my kitchen early one morning when I felt the bite. It seemed as if it was viscous frenzied attack this of time with my leg, knee area being the target. Instantly bringing my leg from under the table and rolling up my pjs to view.
Wow, these were the same kind of bites as the one previously on my hand earlier in the year. These where huge and instantly growing by the second and producing the same kind of blister formation as before.
Five bites but one of them, I believe to be the first bite in the frenzy took centre stage with its circumference of a similar size to a saucer and a good 5/6mm in height. Lovely!
Now, logically, I had confirmation that the bites came from a mosquito as there were more than one bite and having lived in Thailand and, contracting dengue from a mosquito whilst there, I believed this bite was the same as I had i Thailand.
However, the doubts came because I wasn’t aware that the Tiger Mosquito was present in the uk as i’m sure many of you aren’t.
After scowling page after page online I found my confirmation that the Tiger Mosquito has in fact been spotted here in the UK since 2016 all due to climate change.
