Sue & the Neighbours – The Open House

Sue & the Neighbours – The Open House
After-Dark Diaries – Sue & the Neighbours Spin-off
Welcome to Something New
Darlings, I’ve gone and done it. One minute, I was planning a quiet night with a bubble bath and a glass of fizz. The next, I was hosting an open-house party for the entire building. The plan was simple: sip, mingle, charm a few neighbours. Reality? Thirty people, twenty opinions, and chaos so delicious it should come with a health warning.
Sharon, perched on the sofa with sequins glittering like a disco ball and a box of Maltesers at her side, leaned over.
“Thirty neighbours, Sue. Thirty. And you thought five would be civilised?”
I tugged nervously at my black cocktail dress. “I thought… maybe five. Polite chaos, right?”
Sharon snorted. “Civilised isn’t a word that exists in your life. Ever.”
And with that, the first night of Sue & the Neighbours officially began.
The Calm Before the Storm
I’d transformed the flat into something vaguely Instagram-worthy: fairy lights twinkling across the living room, a drinks trolley groaning under gin, mixers, and Sharon’s emergency tequila stash, and a cheese board that looked sophisticated until someone sneezed near it. My black cocktail dress hugged me just enough to feel daring without causing a scandal.
Then I saw it. Dan. My bright pink rabbit vibrator, perched like a rogue modern-art sculpture on the drinks trolley.
Sharon: “Darling… is that a cocktail stirrer or… is that the infamous Dan?”
I panicked. “It’s avant-garde décor!”
Sharon: “Performance art, more like a conversation starter that could bite.”
And just like that, Dan became the unofficial party mascot.
Guests Begin to Arrive
Mrs. Green barrelled in first, knitting basket in hand, hidden whiskey peeking out.
“I brought my own tipple!” she winked.
Sharon whispered: “Either knitting socks or starting a revolution.”
Next came Ryan, barefoot yoga enthusiast, clutching kale juice.
“Hi, I’m Sue,” I said.
Sharon: “He’s meditated twelve hours a day. Negative vibes transfer through handshakes.”
Elliot the arty neighbour stumbled in, sketchbook under arm, hair permanently messy.
Sharon: “He painted the postman’s dog nude last week. Avoid eye contact.”
Gavin, divorced dad with a six-pack, introduced himself twice. Tanya from 3C, obsessed with astrology, predicted everyone’s emotional chaos. Philip, socks with sandals, loudly debated pineapple on pizza. Thirty neighbours and counting, each bringing their own flair.
Sharon whispered:
“And let’s not forget Mrs. Patel, who gives unsolicited motivational speeches to houseplants.”
I barely had time to breathe before the running commentary began:
-
“Divorced twice. Llama owner. Avoid.”
-
“Collects spoons. Dated a taxidermist. Watch your ankles.”
-
“Married thrice, secret karaoke star. Hide the wine.”
It was like hosting a zoo with opinions, and I was both zookeeper and spectator.
Chaos Spreads
By nine, the flat was a fully functioning madhouse. Someone locked themselves in the spare room for a “feng shui emergency.” Elliot’s sketchbook was trampled. Alexa, commandeered by Philip, blared questionable dance tunes. Wine flew. Canapés became missiles. And then… the inevitable.
A couple slipped into the bathroom. Thuds, giggles, and breathless whispers filled the hallway.
Sharon peeked around the doorframe.
“Fire brigade or betting odds?”
I banged lightly:
“Keep the tiles clean! Please! And keep the moans and giggling down!”
Guests in the hallway laughed hysterically. Mrs. Green, three sips of whiskey in, shouted:
“Close the window! It’s draughty! And behave like humans!”
Dan the Pink Mascot
Meanwhile, Dan decided to make his move. Vibrating with impeccable timing, he sent the drinks trolley wobbling like a tipsy tightrope walker. Mrs. Green, blissfully oblivious, picked him up, mistaking him for some avant-garde microphone.
“Look! An unusual pink thing! Shall we sing?”
Sharon’s eyes went wide. “Not singing! Not anywhere near this flat!”
Chaos erupted: wine glasses teetered, guests scrambled in panic, someone tripped over the rug, and Dan… well, Dan was now officially the most scandalously entertaining object in the room, stealing the spotlight without even trying.

Mrs. Green’s Dance floor Takeover
By now, Mrs. Green was unstoppable. Whiskey in one hand, knitting basket in the other, she twirled through the flat like a glittery cyclone. Elliot tried to match her with some arty spin, Ryan attempted a yoga pirouette mid-toast, and anyone who got close became an unwilling dance partner.
Sharon gasped.
“And Mrs. Green spins! Drunken artist whirl! She’s just knocked Dan off the drinks trolley-he’s flying through the air like a very pink comet!”
I lunged to catch him, but he bounced off Gavin’s shoulder and landed in a canapé tray. My cheese board was ruined, my dignity vanished under a toppled chair, and Dan… well, Dan was clearly living his best party life, stealing every scene with zero effort.
Beautiful, chaotic, utterly ridiculous.
Neighbourly Mayhem
I barely had time to say hello before the parade of chaos began:
“Hi, I’m Sue.”
Sharon whispered: “Collects spoons. Talks to her cactus at 3 a.m. Avoid.”
“Hello again, I’m Sue.”
Sharon: “Twice divorced, owns a llama, and will judge your wine choices. Beware.”
The balcony became a smoking hotspot slash acrobatics arena. Someone tipped a wine glass, narrowly missing Mrs. Green’s whiskey-soaked hat, while Dan, now lying innocently in the canapé tray after his aerial debut, vibrated with mischievous glee, sending olives and tiny pastries flying in unpredictable directions.
In the kitchen, Tanya argued passionately over pineapple on pizza, Gavin philosophised about anchovies, and Philip tried to DJ with the subtlety of a marching band. Elliot was sketching everyone mid-chaos, capturing expressions ranging from “help me” to “I’m fabulous.”
I ducked behind the sofa, cocktail in hand, muttering:
“Dan, behave. Please. I don’t want a pink vibrator redecorating the kitchen.”
Somehow, the flat was simultaneously a dance floor, a debate stage, and a wildlife documentary, and I was front-row, cocktail-fortified, trying not to lose my mind… or my dress.
Bathroom Flirty Chaos
The bathroom couple transformed my spare loo into a teenage romance scene. Muffled squeaks, giggles, and whispered “oh, don’t stop.”
Sharon peeked in.
“Place bets or call the fire brigade?”
I banged gently on the door:
“Tiles! Use caution! And do try to breathe, not laugh, and remain civil!”
They emerged eventually, disheveled, whispering, and red-faced. Guests clapped sarcastically.
Balcony & Bedroom Antics
Some guests drifted to the balcony. Ryan tried meditation. Gavin leaned too far, shouting about safety. The bedroom became a gossip corner for Tanya, Elliot, and Philip plotting imaginary dramas.
Dan, ever the show-stealer, ended up near the bedroom door, vibrating, accidentally kicked by a curious guest, and causing laughter across the flat.
Rapid-Fire One-Liners & Mishaps
Sharon, perched like a hawk, narrated every absurdity:
-
“Mrs. Patel is lecturing a cactus about mindfulness.”
-
“Elliot just sketched Philip’s socks in neon green. It’s… alarming.”
-
“Ryan is meditating on the balcony while a wine glass wobbles dangerously next to him. Pray for karma.”
-
“Gavin just tripped over the fairy lights. It’s performance art!”
I added my own commentary as chaos collided with charm:
“And that, my darlings, is why I keep a fire extinguisher near the sofa.”
The Grand Finale
By midnight, the flat was a glorious, glittery disaster: fairy lights dangling like drunken snakes, chairs overturned like dominos, drinks teetering on every surface, and canapés scattered like confetti at a parade. Guests slumped wherever they could find space, giggling, whispering, or pretending they were totally fine.
Mrs. Green had claimed my armchair, knitting basket hugged to her chest, wobbling slightly from whiskey-induced glee, grinning like a child who’d just discovered chocolate for the first time.
Sharon spotted Dan, hiding under a pile of cushions after his accidental tumble by the bedroom door. With the delicacy of a bomb disposal expert, she retrieved him and waved him triumphantly:
“Victory! Our pink little hero lives to vibrate another day!”
I sank into the sofa, adjusting my dress, taking in the scene: thirty neighbours, thirty personalities, endless gossip, and me, trying to host politely amidst utter chaos. Dan buzzed quietly in Sharon’s hand, as if agreeing that yes, this flat had officially lost all sense of order.
Sharon leaned against the doorframe, smirking:
“Well, darling… the neighbours know us now. And some of them will probably need counselling by morning.”
I laughed until my sides hurt, cocktail in hand, thinking about the evening’s madness – a rogue pink rabbit, a spinning Mrs. Green, canapés in mid-flight, balcony acrobatics, and the bathroom couple’s clandestine giggles. This was just the beginning: a series of flat parties, neighbourly shenanigans, and Dan-fuelled disasters.
That always seems to be my life, chaos! the question is, will I do it all again…?
