After-Dark Diaries – Dog Walking at Dawn
A Frosty Morning on Hampstead Heath That Changed Everything
The steamiest British winter fantasy you’ll read this year, and yes, it could happen to you
Reader intro…
After-Dark Diaries – Dog-Walking at Dawn is about cold mornings, empty parks, tangled leads, and two dogs who refuse to be separated.
What starts as an innocent 6 a.m. dog walk turns into the kind of slow-burn encounter that leaves you warm for the rest of winter.
Realistic? If you’ve ever walked a dog in a London park before the city wakes up, you already know the spark is there.
Relatable? Grab your coat, your torch, and your filthy imagination… this one’s for you.
5:47 a.m. – The Alarm That Starts It All
My phone buzzes under the pillow like it’s personally offended by my existence. Outside, London is still pitch black, and the streetlights are glowing orange through the frost on the window.
Luna, my two-year-old cockapoo, is already sitting on my chest, tail thumping and her eyes wide with the manic energy only dogs have at stupid o’clock.
“Fine,” I mutter, pulling on yesterday’s leggings, an oversized hoodie, and the biggest puffer coat I own. No makeup. Hair in a messy bun that could generously be called “effortless.” Trainers are still damp from yesterday’s walk.
We’re out the door by 6:05, my breath fogging in the freezing air as we head for Hampstead Heath because it’s the closest place Luna can run off-lead without me getting a fine.

6:18 a.m. – The Heath in Winter Darkness
The frosty paths are crunchy beneath my feet. My phone torch lights a narrow tunnel ahead. Everywhere else is inky black, and the city skyline is just starting to glow on the horizon.
There’s something magical about the Heath at this hour. No commuters. No tourists. There’s just the occasional serious runner and a handful of us dog people who sold our souls for furry overlords.
I unclip Luna’s lead near the ponds, and as soon as she hears the click, she bolts off into the darkness like a small white missile.
That’s when I hear him before I see him.
A low, playful growl, then the thunder of paws. A big black Labrador barrels out of the gloom and tackles Luna mid-zoom. They roll together in a joyful tangle of fur and delighted barking.
“Winston! Mate, leave it!”
His voice cuts through the cold. I can hear his accent, it’s deep North London and sounds a little rough from sleep. The kind of voice that could read the phone book and make it sound dirty.

6:22 a.m. – The Leads Get Tangled
I shine my torch toward the noise. He’s jogging over, tall in a navy beanie and a fitted running jacket that does nothing to hide broad shoulders. Breath clouding. Cheeks flushed from the cold.
“Sorry about that,” he says, reaching us just as the dogs decide to wrap their extendable leads around our legs like they’re playing some canine bondage game.
We both reach down at the same time to untangle them. Our hands brush. Gloved fingers against bare ones. Neither of us flinches.
Luna and Winston are now inseparable, chasing each other in circles, leads twisting tighter.
“Looks like they’ve decided for us,” he laughs, voice low. “I’m Jake, by the way.”
“Sophie,” I manage, suddenly very aware that I’m wearing yesterday’s knickers and haven’t brushed my teeth yet.
6:28 a.m. – Walking Together in the Dark
We give up fighting the leads and start walking together, dogs pulling us side by side like this was always the plan.
The conversation flows stupidly easily for 6:30 in the morning.
He’s a paramedic, works night shifts, and uses these walks to unwind before bed. Lives in Gospel Oak. Winston is three, he was rescued during lockdown, a total velcro dog.
I tell him about my marketing job, the reason I’m up at this hour (Luna has separation anxiety and screams if left alone too long). We laugh about the ridiculous things we do for our dogs.
The sky starts to lighten, turning that deep winter blue. Frost glitters on the grass like someone scattered diamonds.
Every time the dogs surge forward, our arms brush. Every time they stop to sniff something fascinating, we’re pulled closer.
By the time we reach the top of Parliament Hill, the leads have done their job. We’re standing shoulder to shoulder, the city is spread out below us, and our dogs are finally exhausted and sitting nicely.

6:45 a.m. – The First Real Touch
The sun is just starting to creep over the skyline, painting everything gold.
“It’s beautiful up here,” I say quietly.
“Yeah,” he replies, but he’s looking at me, not the view.
There’s a beat. That charged silence where everything hangs.
His hand finds mine. Bare skin, this time, he’s taken his gloves off without me noticing. His fingers are warm despite the cold.
I don’t pull away.
He steps closer. Slowly. Giving me every chance to move.
But I don’t.
His lips brush mine, tentative at first, tasting of coffee and cold air. Then, deeper, when I kiss him back, my free hand slides under his jacket to find the warm cotton of his t-shirt.
The dogs sit patiently, watching like they planned this whole thing.
6:52 a.m. – Behind the Oak Tree
We break apart, breathing hard and with frost on our eyelashes.
“There’s a better view around here,” he murmurs, nodding toward a massive old oak just off the path. Secluded. Hidden from the main track.
I let him lead me.
The second we’re out of sight, his hands are on my waist, backing me gently against the rough bark. My coat falls open. His mouth finds my neck, teeth grazing the spot that makes my knees weak.
I tug his beanie off, fingers threading through thick hair that’s still damp from a recent shower. He smells incredible, fresh clean skin, faint musk, and something uniquely him.
His hands slide under my hoodie, his palms flat against my back, pulling me closer. I can feel how hard he is through his running leggings.
“Fuck, Sophie,” he groans against my throat. “Been wanting to do this since the dogs tackled each other.”
7:03 a.m. – Cold Hands, Hot Skin
My leggings are tugged down just enough. His pants are pushed low on his hips.
It’s desperate and quick and perfect, my back against the tree, one leg hooked around his waist, his hand over my mouth when I get too loud because there are now a few more dog walkers about.
He’s thick and hot and moves like he’s been thinking about this for longer than the last forty minutes.
I come first, biting down on his palm, whole body shaking from the cold and the intensity. He follows seconds later, buried deep, and his forehead pressed against mine, breathing my name like a prayer.

7:15 a.m. – The Afterglow
We sort ourselves out quickly, laughing breathlessly at the state of us. Leaves in hair. Frost on our coats. Our dogs were looking very pleased with themselves.
He kisses me slowly and softly this time, hands cupping my face.
“Same time tomorrow?” he asks, thumb brushing my bottom lip.
I nod, still dazed.
8:30 a.m. – Back Home, Still Buzzing
Luna is finally calm enough for me to shower properly. I stand under the hot water replaying every second the cold air on my skin, the heat of his mouth, the way he said my name when he came.
My phone buzzes as I’m drying my hair.
Unknown number: Winston says Thank you for the playdate. Jake x
I save it immediately.
One final thought before you go…
Next time you’re dragged out of bed at dawn by a demanding furry tyrant, take a proper look at the other bleary-eyed souls in the park.
Because somewhere out there, on a frosty morning in a London park, two dogs might just decide their humans need to be tangled up too.
And when the leads get knotted, and the hands brush in the dark… don’t untangle them too quickly.
You never know where dawn might lead you.
