It’s Windy!

It’s Windy!

It’s Windy!

Good morning,

Wow, it’s Windy out there! Trees are swaying, fences are fighting to stand tall and furniture covers are fiercely flapping in these gusts. With each strong gust of wind, I can see the street lamp from my kitchen judder testing their flexibility and yet, the birds have just started to sing, how weird is that…

At the time of writing this post, it’s 4am and the wind from storm Dudley is fierce although not as strong as the north of the UK is experiencing. We will experience up to 90 mph winds from storm Eunice set to arrive in the East Thursday night/ Friday morning.

If you are old enough to remember the storm of 1987 (sadly I am) here in the East and the severity of winds, then this should give you an idea of what might come. I hope the force of the wind dies down before then as the loss of life, disruption, damage and costs were enormous.

I was only a young girl but I remember it clearly, to give you and idea, in my area the BP garage forecourt roof was lifted and twisted (back then, it was Mobil garage). A three story building, the exterior wall on the top two floors was blown down exposing the interior. 100’s of trees in the East fell causing mayhem, they lay where they fell landing on vehicles, blocking roads etc.

If memory serves me right, yes we were told of strong winds coming as we all went to sleep that night but nobody expected the severity of what came.

Weather forecast of October 1987

Michael Fisher was the weather forecaster at the time and these were his forecasting words –

“Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way; well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t, but having said that, actually, the weather will become very windy, but most of the strong winds, incidentally, will be down over Spain and across into France”.

As you can imagine, he was ridiculed over his weather predictions.

Technology has moved on since then so let’s hope the weather forecast is more accurate and if anything, they have over reacted to the severity of the wind gusts that are gearing up in storm Eunice.

Before venturing out to the shops, ask yourself, do I really need this, can I wait?

Wherever you are located here in the UK, stay alert and please be careful.

Take care of you and yours,

Sue x
